For the past two articles (Why Are You Here part 1; part 2) , The Laser Coaching Moment has focused on helping you identify and live in your purpose. In last week’s article, I shared with you how I helped one of my clients come to a breakthrough in determining her purpose. Instead of being complicated, Janet discovered that identifying her life’s purpose was quite simple.
This week, I’d like to share Janet’s second breakthrough …
My purpose isn’t about me
You may remember from part 1 that Janet came to me because she was dissatisfied with her career. However, when we began to peel back the layers of her discontent, Janet discovered that she actually enjoyed her position. The problem wasn’t her job – it was her focus.
As Janet described the moments in her career when she felt the most aligned with her purpose, she reflected on moments early in her career when she worked directly with clients. I could hear the enthusiasm and passion in her voice as she recalled the times when she’d worked day and night to come up with just the right ideas for her clients and the joy she felt when her projects impacted her clients’ business success. When I asked her what was different in her current position, she immediately told me – “the client connection”. Janet had an “a-ha” moment as she realized (in her own words) – “my purpose isn’t about me”.
One of my favorite coaching questions relating to purpose comes from Valorie Burton – “How is someone else’s life better because they crossed your path?” On the most basic level, your life’s purpose doesn’t come from your career or title. It comes through your daily interactions with others.
If you go back to the Life Purpose Exercise I shared in part 1, you’ll see that the third step asks you to think about how you’d like to impact the world and people around you. In fact, any good purpose exercise will have you thinking about how you use your talents and abilities to serve others. If you are attempting to live a life of purpose without considering how your life benefits others, you will continue to remain dissatisfied and unmotivated.
My challenge to you this week:
Connect your purpose to the people around you – “How is someone’s life better because they crossed your path?”
