Why Are You Here (part 2)

My previous article, Do You Know Why You’re Here, was my most read article to date. From the overwhelming number of comments I received, it is apparent that living a purposeful life is a very pressing concern for most people.

In my last article, I mentioned Janet, a marketing executive who came to me for coaching because she was unsatisfied with her career. During our first session, when I asked her about her life’s purpose she told me, “I’m in a high paying career at the top of the corporate ladder. Yet, for some reason, and I’m not sure what it is, this is not the right place for me. I’m ready to make some changes, but I just don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing…I can’t answer this purpose question right now.”

During our time together, Janet was able to discover and begin to live a purposeful life and today she’s enjoying greater levels of health, wealth, and happiness. With Janet’s permission, I’d like to share with you the breakthroughs she made during coaching to help you on your journey to living a life filled with passion, purpose, and power.

Janet made two significant discoveries about living a purposeful life during our coaching sessions. I’ll share the first one with you today –

Finding Your Life’s Purpose Isn’t Complicated

Janet’s homework from our first session was to complete the Life Purpose Exercise I shared in last week’s newsletter. She came to our second session a bit skeptical – she’d completed the exercise but she didn’t think she’d done enough. “There should have been more to do.”

It’s not surprising that Janet felt this way. Over the past few years, there have been a number of books and programs produced to help you find your life’s purpose. Many times these books and programs make it seem as if you have to spend years and years of your life doing soul searching exercises. It only took Janet an hour to complete the Life Purpose Exercise and the majority of that time was spent trying to “improve upon” what it took her only 20 minutes to write.

You know who you are. On the most basic level you know what you like and don’t like. You know what you’re good at and you know what you enjoy doing. You don’t have to wait for a mystical epiphany or some mysterious sign to discover your purpose.

If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll admit that you already know your purpose in life you’re just uncertain about how to honor that purpose. After Janet was able to accept that she knew her purpose, her next dilemma was how to use that purpose in her every day life.

Next week, I’ll share with you the breakthrough Janet had related to truly living a life of purpose.

My challenge to you this week:
Keep it simple. Don’t try to overcomplicate your life’s purpose.
